RYOBI 18V ONE+ Brushless 4-1/2" Grinder Kit (P423)

RYOBI’s ONE+ system has grown to nearly 200 tools. From drills, angle grinders, blowers, music speakers, and lawn mowers, the power system can outfit your entire garage with batteries ranging from an economic 1.5Ah to a monstrous 9.0Ah charge capacity.

The P423 includes a 3.0Ah battery, which should suffice for most weekend jobs. Consider adding a larger battery if you’re looking for marathon sessions grinding away welds on metal tubing. At over 10,000 rpm, the RYOBI makes quick work of all sorts of rust removal, power carving, paint removal, and polishing.

RYOBI keeps up with the competition by moving to a brushless motor system. This reduces maintenance cycles as well as extends tool life.

The switch is a bit different from other models but is intuitive enough. The P423 uses a top-mounted lock-on switch. It’s a two-sided coin: lock-on switches are convenient for long working sessions since a trigger doesn’t have to be constantly pressed but it requires a conscious eye to make sure you turn the tool off before setting it down.

The wheel guard is tool-free and is easily locked and unlocked by way of a guard lever. The lever is unobtrusive and is easily acutated when you need to rotate the wheel guard.

A unique feature that we appreciate is the onboard tool storage for the spanner wrench. Wheel changes become very frustrating when you have to spend an hour finding the wrench. Most of us will just resort to a pair of channel-lock pliers. The RYOBI P423 stores the wrench inside the handle for easy retrieval when wheel changes are desired.

Another feature we love is the multi-position handle. It boggles the mind why most competing models don’t include this feature but the top-mount option is incredibly valuable for certain cutting operations. Ergonomics and leverage are very important for angle grinders and the top-mount option gives another position to maximize maneuverability.

The included charger brings a dead battery to full in under an hour. Status lights indicate the progress of the charging cycles. The battery also includes a set of status lights so you know how much juice is left in the tank.
