The DCS578 is a part of the MAX system from DEWALT. It’s commonly referred to as the 20V MAX, 60V MAX, or 20/60V MAX. It can be a bit confusing but here are the basics:

  • Batteries come in two flavors: 20V and 60V
  • Tools come in two flavors: 20V and 60V
  • 20V tools can use 20V and 60V batteries
  • 60V tools can only use 60V batteries

So if you’re looking to expand your DEWALT FLEXVOLT system, consider stocking your pond with a decent number of 60V batteries since 20V batteries can only be used on the 20V tools.

This circular saw is a part of the 60V line so it can only use 60V batteries. These batteries are offered all the way to 12Ah, which is absolutely massive. Batteries of this size ensure you’ll be able to just about anything.

The DCS578 delivers a ton of power that rivals corded tools. The saw spins the blade at an impressive 5800 rpms which helps with chip load and clearing the blade kerfs.

The saw can bevel a decent amount past 45 degrees (all the way to 57 degrees). One feature we like are the positive bevel stops at 22.5- and 45-degrees. This helps for confident and quick bevel adjustments for repeated cuts.

The larger 7-1/4″ blade can cut through common stock at all angles. 45 degree capability reaches all the way to 2-9/16″ which is enough for all dimensional lumber.

Another feature we like is the electric brake. Every second counts during long work sessions with repeated cuts and the DCS578 aims to resolve this with the brake that slows the blade down within seconds.

Also very useful: the integrated LED light. Keeping the cutline illuminated (especially in darker settings) is especially helpful in ensuring accurate cuts.

A tool hook rests on the forward face of the saw. It’s unobstrusive when folded against the saw body but handy when deployed. When you’re in a situation where no flat surfaces are easily accessible to lay the saw down, the tool hook allows you to temporarily hang it on just about anything (studs, rafters, branches, etc).

Construction felt very solid in hand. We’re confident that this model can take a beating and still keep cranking through all sorts of cutting jobs.

Lever-actuated bevel and depth guages make for quick adjustments. We like this format since it’s a bit easier to operate than the chearper and less-sturdy knobs found on other competing models.

CONSENSUS:

The DEWALT DCS578 paired with a 60V battery can take on nearly any other corded circular saw we’ve used. The portability and LED illumination provides everything we want and nothing we don’t need. Give this saw a serious consideration, especially if you’ve started collecting other FLEXVOLT tools from DEWALT.
