15 amps ensures you can easily power through 2×4 given saw’s 2-⅜” cut capacity. Build quality is impressive considering the price. Cutting 4x4s won’t be a single-step operation with this saw, but it should easily tackle thicker beams with a cut-rotate-cut approach. Just go slow to avoid bogging down the motor or blade.
Let’s talk about the laser. We at WWC aren’t quite sure why all circ saws don’t incorporate this feature but we appreciate SKIL’s built-in laser that comes included in the 5280. While track saws are always recommended for long rip cuts, especially for sheet goods, there’s a case to be made for the accuracy a laser provides apart from a straight edge guide. Free-handing cuts with the laser allows for quick and easy rip cuts when a 99% accurate cut will do. When absolute edges are crucial, we recommend outfitting the 5280 with Kreg’s KMA2700 tracksaw kit; alternatively, a fully independent track saw system such as the DEWALT DWS520K or the Makita SP6000 will provide expedient solutions for breaking down sheet goods.
The 5280 includes a dust blower function that keeps the business end of the saw free from debris. The laser does no good if it shines on a pile of sawdust in front of your blade; fortunately, SKIL takes this into consideration. Additionally, an arbor lock aids in blade changes, which we’d encourage if you decide to incorporate the 5280 into your tool chest. The WWC favorite is a Freud 40T ATB Finishing Blade.
- Low entry price
- Laser guidance makes for easy & accurate cuts
- Mediocre build quality
- Lack of included accessories
CONSENSUS:
The SKIL 5280 is a great entry-level circular saw. We recommend this unit for anyone desiring to dip their feet into a mound of sawdust.
