At 4.4 lbs, this jig saw is about average in weight. Not too heavy, not too light. We like that. The base is constructed of cast aluminum and includes a no-mar cover.
3,350 strokes-per-minute isn’t the fastest on the market but it’s pretty close. The P524 can handle anything from softwood lumber to sheet metal. Just make sure the appropriate blade and speed are set.
Generally, slower speeds are better for hard materials like metal and faster speeds are better for soft materials like pine or MDF.
Blade speeds are controlled with a lever on the top of the saw. We could reach it with our thumb while cutting so it’s not a challenge ergonomically but it is a little different than the other variable triggers we’ve used.
The four orbital settings give additional levels of cutting performance in wood or plastic. We wouldn’t recommend these for metal or laminates. Slow and steady will result in a cut that’s cleaner, straighter, and easier to control.
Like other saws on the market, the RYOBI P524 has an adjustable base that can bevel left or right up to 45 degrees. Detents for 15- and 30-degree cuts are included for convenience. A lever located on the underside of the saw allows for quick and tool-less blade changes.
A light and a blower function are included on the P524, which is a welcome sight. Work lights on jig saws do the user no good if all they do is illuminate a pile of dust accumulating in front of the blade.
The P524 utilizes a twist-lock blade clamp. No need to touch hot blades either. Just twist the mechanism and blades pop right out. Note that this jig saw only accepts t-shank blades.
- Affordable cordless jig saw
- Includes light and blower
- Tool-less bevel adjustment
- Bevel lever seemed a little flimsy
- Blade speed control takes some getting used to if you’re used to variable triggers
CONSENSUS:
The RYOBI P524 packs a surprising amount of features in a very capable tool. It’s blade speed controls might take some time getting accustomed to but it won’t be an issue for a first-time jig saw user. This is a great jig saw for the occasional use or weekend warrior in need of a jig saw for a specific project.
IMPORTANT NOTE: We monitor multiple tool retailers and we’ve noticed that prices for the RYOBI P524 inexplicably and significantly vary across online retailers. If you are considering this unit, do some price comparisons first.
