DEWALT Compact Jobsite Table Saw (DWE7485)

DEWALT continues to improve upon the tried-and-true format of a compact table saw. Saws in this class are usually bundled with portable stands, weigh less than 50 lbs, and offer performance capabilities that satisfy 95% of a weekend warrior’s needs while not breaking the bank.

The DWE7485 checks all these boxes in spades.

In regards to power, this saw offers plenty considering its compact class. Lumber that is fed in a responsible manner should give the saw no issues. The 8-¼” blade capacity allows for higher RPMs than some of the heavier cabinet-grade saws.

An oft-ignored relationship is power and blade. Track cars require certain tire parameters to maximize traction, maneuverability, and efficiency. Table saws are no different and greatly benefit from higher quality blades that slice through tough grain more efficiently. The DWE7485 ships with a basic 24T (24-tooth) contractor-grade blade; do yourself a favor: spend a little extra and upgrade to a DEWALT DWA181440 or a Freud D0840X ATB. Note that the arbor is shorter than most, so a standard dado stack won’t naturally fit.

Rip capacity stands at just over 24”, which means a full sheet of plywood can be ripped in half. For larger operations such as these, we’d recommend employing the helpful services of a friend or using outfeed tables.

The construction of the DWE7485 is extremely solid considering its compact class. The base is stable and not prone to flexing or vibrations. Stock feed rates are smooth thanks to the slick coating standard with the top. While most table saws use Beisemeyer-style fences, the DEWALT uses a rack & pinion style fence, which allows for smooth movements and adjustments, both large and micro. The fence is not heavy, which could be considered a downside but we’ve seen no issue with deflection under normal loads. The included miter gauge is fairly light and its plentiful use of plastic is unimpressive. Consider springing for an all-metal alternative such as the Incra MITERV27 (our weapon of choice) or the Powertec 71142.

As with any respectable table saw, the DWE7845 allows for the blade to tilt (48 degrees in this case). The adjustment mechanism is particularly ‘manual’ and it can be difficult to dial in exact angles. We recommend using a digital angle gauge (such as this one made by Wixey) to ensure the blade is tilted to the desired degree.

Dust collection is adequate. A 2.5” port accepts commonly-sized hoses and relieves the saw of the majority of dust; however, the design of the blade tilt mechanism requires a front-facing slot that allows a small amount of dust to be ejected back at the operator.

The DWE7845 includes several safety accessories. The fence contains onboard storage for the included push stick. A riving knife bolts behind the blade and prevents kickbacks by keeping freshly-cut lumber from pinching the blade. Two additional safety accessories can be mounted to the riving knife: an anti-kickback pawl and a blade guard. The pawl isn’t our favorite since its function relies on teeth digging into the wood to prevent kickback. The kickback isn’t noticeably reduced and the teeth can scratch your stock. The guard, however, is a valuable addition as it can prevent accidental hand placement close to the blade. With the exception of the pawl, these safety accessories are invaluable to ensuring that your fingers stay in their intended configuration. That being said, the most important safety features for any power tool will always be careful eyes, deliberate hands, and focused minds.
